Greeting Cards for Magha Puja Day (Meakh Bochea)

Magha Puja Day (Meakh Bochea)  is one of the most important Buddhist celebrations which falls on the full moon day of the third lunar month (about last week of February or early of March).

Meak Bochea

This day marks the great four events that took place during Buddha’s lifetime, namely;
  1. 1250 Buddhist monks from different places came to pay homage to Lord Buddha at Valuwan Vihara in Rajgaha, the capital of Magaha State, each of his own initiative and without prior notification or appointment.
  2. all of them were the enlightened monks (or Arahantas)
  3. all of them had been individually ordained by Lord Buddha himself (Ehi Bhikkhu)
  4. They assembled on the full moon day of the third lunar month.
On the evening of that day, Buddha gave the assembly a discourse “Ovadha Patimokha” laying down the principles of His Teachings summarised into three acts, i.e. to do good, to abstain from bad action and to purify the mind.

Each Buddha Temple will lead hundreds of people in a candlelit procession held within the temple’s compound. In general, most Buddhists are not aware of the Significance of this day. As a result, a number of people taking part in the ceremony may be less than on other days such as Visakha Puja or Asanha Puja Days. Even so Magha Puja Day carries an equal meaning to all Buddhists.

This festival is also known as Fourfold Assembly or Magha Puja Day.

Sangha Day is the second most important Buddhist festival. It is a celebration in honour of the Sangha, or the Buddhist community. For some Buddhists Sangha refers only to monks and nuns. It is a chance for people to reaffirm their commitment to Buddhist practices and traditions.
Sangha Day commemorates the spontaneous gathering of 1,250 enlightened monks (arahants) to hear the Buddha preach at Veluvana Vihara.

At this gathering, the Buddha gave his first sermon, or recitation of the Patimokkha (the rules and regulations of the monastic order).

Sangha is the term used for the Buddhist spiritual community. On Sangha Day Buddhists celebrate both the ideal of creating a spiritual community, and also the actual spiritual community which they are trying to create.
The Sangha is precious in Buddhism as without those in the community to look up to or share aspirations with, the spiritual life would be very challenging.

Sangha Day is a traditional time for exchange of gifts; it has become a prominent festival among Western Buddhists even though it is less well known in the East.

Celebrations vary, but can include chanting, meditation, the lighting of oil lamps, and the reaffirmation of people's commitment to Buddhist practice.

To the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha

With the wish to free all beings
until we reach full awakening
I will always go for refuge
To the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha

Today, in the presence of the enlightened ones
Inspired by Wisdom, Compassion and Joyous Effort
I generate the mind aspiring to full buddhahood
For the Well-being of all Sentient beings.

For as long as space endures
and as long as sentient beings remain
until then, may I too, abide
to dispel the misery of the world.

Sutra of Golden Light

Jamyang will be joining the worldwide recitation of "The Sutra of Golden Light" in support of World Peace organised by the International Mahayana Institute.

So far they have already received pledges for almost 900 recitations. International Sangha Prayers for World Peace is part of International Sangha Day, August 5th.

Each day, we are overwhelmed with news of earthquakes and floods, war, environmental disaster, abuse and neglect. We see the pictures and hear the stories and feel helpless to bring about real change, but there is a way to help. Reciting "The Sutra of Golden Light" effects real change to benefit real beings.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche says:

Acts of terrorism will be averted. Acts of violence will stop. China will return to Buddhism and will relax its hold on Tibet. Natural catastrophes will be avoided. Crops will be successful. The environment will be clean. People will be safe. If there is war, it will end and there will be peace.

Every year people celebrate Bonfire Night with firework displays and blazing bonfires. It remembers an event which happened 400 years ago. A UK tradition that dates back to the gunpowder plot to blow up the houses of parliament by Guy Fawkes a few hundred years ago...Most people still build bonfires every year on the 5th of November, and set off lots of fireworks When i was a kid many years ago I caught fire and had a firecraker go off in my hand. Its a long story folks.

Story of Little Red Riding Hood

Once upon a time there was a dear little girl who was loved by everyone who looked at her, but most of all by her grandmother, and there was nothing that she would not have given to the child. Once she gave her a little riding hood of red velvet, which suited her so well that she would never wear anything else; so she was always called 'Little Red Riding Hood.' Dia de Los Muertos All Saints Day

All Saints' Day, followed tomorrow by All Souls' Day, both rolled into one as the Día de los Muertos. For many Catholics, a day to contemplate the saints and make up for any missed feast days during the rest of the year. A spiritual catch-up day. Tomorrow, All Souls' Day, the Feast of All Souls, the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed. Coming hard on the heels of All Hallows' Eve, it's a real spookathon. Attention must be paid.

One of the enduring powers of Catholicism is its collective willingness to absorb elements of other religious and cultural ceremonies and traditions. Hardcore Protestants seem to treat it all as "Devil's work." As a Catholic, I think I'll stick with what I've got. If there's to be an exorcism, I'd rather have it done by an ordained Catholic priest than by some lay evangelical.
