Turning Your House Into A Home

There is a great deal of difference between a house and a home. A house is simply a building with no emotional attachment. A home is a place where you feel comfort and warmth, a place where love can flourish.

It is true that any place can be a home but if you really want to encourage the good feelings in your home, you need to make it a place where you are pleased with your surroundings. Here are some tips on how to turn your house into a home.

Family Rooms

First, in order to create close family bonds, you and your family need to spend time together. Make sure that the gathering rooms such as the living room, kitchen and den are places where everyone feels welcome and comfortable. When everyone can relax in a single place then bonding can occur.

The rooms where your family spends most of its time have a tendency to become cluttered and eclectic. The floor in any room is, quite literally, the room's base; everything else you put into a room should be related to the look of the floor. To create a room full of warmth, you might want to try thick, comfy carpeting or shaggy area rugs. To minimize your family's clutter, be sure to include plenty of storage areas in any room your family spends a great deal of time in. The kitchen is easy, as they usually come equipped with plenty of cabinets and drawers. In a den or living room, you can accomplish the same thing by incorporating bookshelves, tables with drawers or shelves and desks into your decor.

Make sure that the seating arrangements in these rooms easily accommodate every one in the family. Bedrooms

Bedrooms are also an important place to feel comfortable in your home. Although spending time in your bedroom may not actually improve the bonding process, starting your day in a good mood most certainly will.

Obviously, the bed is the most integral part of any bedroom; decide on the type of bed you want first and then build the rest of the room from there. Matching bedroom suites are an easy way to give any bedroom a cohesive feel but the walls, lighting and floor are important also. The possibilities are endless; however, make sure that your bedroom expresses your personal style.

As young children, they will be easily influenced by your sense of style but as they get older, they may want their room to reflect their style. Adolescents often find their bedrooms to be a place of refuge so let them make it someplace they are happy with.

There are, of course, other rooms in your house and making them a pleasure to spend time in will affect how you feel about your home. First and foremost, focus on the gathering places in your home and let the bonding begin.
