Chemmy Alcott: Zara Phillips Pictures

British Olympic skier Chemmy Alcott was ranked eighth in the world when she crashed on a World Cup training run in 2010 and broke her right leg so badly that – brace yourself – the bones literally pierced her ski boots. Experts described her injuries as “career ending”, but Chemmy, 29, is determined to prove them wrong. It will be next season before she can race again – her ankle has another 10 degrees to flex – but in the meantime she’s taken up skating in the hope of winning ITV’s Dancing on Ice, and at the time of writing had made it through to the third round.

Skiing career

Burke won first place in the 2001 US Freeskiing Open in the half-pipe and second place in slopestyle. She won the first ever world championship half-pipe event.[1] Burke is also a four-time Winter X Games gold medalist in freestyle skiing.[2][3]

She won ESPN's 2001 Award for female skier of the year and was voted 2007's Best Female Action Sports Athlete at the ESPY awards as well as BERT, the first skier to be so honored.

She regularly participates in skiing films, including Propaganda, in which she showcased her skills by sliding huge rainbow rails, spinning a huge 540 in the pipe and throwing back-flips with ease.
